Heavy melting steel (HMS) scrap specifications include minimum thickness, density, maximum dimensions, and purity. HMS is a type of ferrous scrap made from old iron and steel that’s been recovered from dismantled or demolished items.

Minimum thickness

HMS 1: At least 1⁄4 inch (6.35 mm)
HMS 2: At least 1⁄8 inch (3.175 mm)

Density

HMS 1: At least 0.7 tons per cubic meter

Maximum dimensions

Usually 60 in × 24 in or 1,524 mm × 610 mm

Purity

Free of alloys, rust, scale, lumps, or excessive oil
Maximum copper, chrome, nickel, tin, phosphorous, sulphur, and silicon content

HMS is usually traded as a blend of HMS 1 and HMS 2
